Migration of stones and stone fragments during intracorporeal lithotripsy can lengthen and complicate the procedure, or necessitate subsequent procedures. Traditional baskets or wires may cause trauma to the ureter, interfere with the lithotripter and allow migration of smaller stone fragments.

BackStop is a water soluble gel that is delivered beyond the stone in the ureter and acts to prevent migration during intracorporeal lithotripsy. Once delivered, the catheter is removed, thus freeing the operative field. BackStop is completely atraumatic and will conform to any shape ureter. It has no mechanical parts and will not interfere with the lithotripter. BackStop is compatible with all forms of intracorporeal lithotripsy, including laser and mechanical lithotripters.

When fragmentation and stone removal is compete, BackStop is dissolved via conventional irrigation and the ureteral occlusion is reversed.
